Dubai and Middle East Flight Disruptions: The Latest Updates for Travelers

The latest flight disruption data

The disruption has been uneven across key hubs. Bahrain and Israel recorded the highest cancellation ratios, with more than half of inbound flights grounded. Qatar and Iraq saw cancellation levels approaching 40 per cent. In the UAE, 342 of 1,061 expected arrivals were cancelled as airspace restrictions took effect. Saudi Arabia and Egypt have so far seen a lower proportional impact, though both remain operating within a region experiencing dynamic rerouting and airspace constraints.

Airlines caution that not all services are immediately reflected as official cancellations, and some flights still listed on schedules may not ultimately operate while airspace restrictions remain in place.

Middle East airspace closures

The United Arab Emirates has temporarily closed its airspace, with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announcing the measures were aimed at ensuring the safety of flights and aircrews, as well as safeguarding the UAE’s territory as a wider security issue unfolds in the region.

Dubai Airports confirmed on Saturday that all flight operations at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central—Al Maktoum International (DWC) are suspended “until further notice.” In a statement posted by Dubai Media Offices, passengers are advised “not to travel to the airport at this time and to contact their respective airlines directly for the latest updates regarding their flights.”

Kuwait has also closed its airspace, and has reported a drone attack on its airport. In a statement published by the Public Authority for Civil Aviation, it was confirmed that the attack caused “minor injuries to several employees and limited material damage to Terminal 1.”

Which airlines suspended or changed flights?

All airlines with flights into airports in closed airspace are currently affected, including routes headed for Dubai International Airport, Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport, Bahrain International Airport, Doha’s Hamad International Airport, Kuwait International Airport, Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.

Emirates: Emirates has grounded all flights from Dubai and is advising customers to monitor the situation closely. “We are actively monitoring the situation, engaging with relevant authorities and adjusting our operations in line with the latest developments,” it said in a statement. “Emirates adheres to all regulatory requirements and follows guidance issued by aviation authorities.” Customers are advised to contact the airline or the travel agent they booked with.

Etihad Airways: Etihad has said its flights are also affected by cancellations. “This remains a highly dynamic situation and further changes may occur at short notice,” it said in a statement. “Etihad continues to monitor developments closely in coordination with the relevant authorities. Safety is always our highest priority and we will only operate flights through approved airspace when it is safe to do so.” It advises customers to contact the airline or booking agent to rebook.

Qatar Airways: The Doha-based airline has extended the “temporary suspension of its flights to, and from, Doha” for the next 24 hours. Writing on X, the airline said: “Qatar Airways flight operations remain temporarily suspended due to the closure of Qatari airspace”. Additional ground staff have been deployed to Hamad International Airport and other regional hubs to assist affected passengers, who are urged to check the airline’s website for more information.

Flydubai: The Dubai carrier has temporarily suspended all flights from and to Dubai until 3pm (local time) on Monday, March 2 because of “ongoing developments in the region”. The airline said: “This is a developing situation, which we are monitoring closely, while working with the relevant authorities to adjust our flight schedule accordingly.”

British Airways: British Airways cancelled all Saturday flights between London Heathrow and Amman, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. It has also grounded flights between London and Bahrain and Tel Aviv until March 3.

Gulf Air: Gulf Air has advised that flights to and from Bahrain are affected, urging passengers to check its website for the latest updates and adding that the “situation is evolving”.

Virgin Atlantic: Virgin Atlantic confirmed it had suspended flights between London Heathrow and Dubai on Saturday, “as a precautionary measure”.

Air India: Air India said on Saturday it was suspending all flights to the Middle East, including Dubai. “In view of the developing situation in parts of the Middle East, all Air India flights to all destinations in the Middle East have been suspended,” the airline said in a statement on X.

Which destinations are affected?

The impact has widened to include major regional hubs and key transit corridors:

Tel Aviv: widespread pauses by major Western carriers and airspace closures
Dubai and Abu Dhabi: UAE airspace is closed with all flights affected
Iranian and Iraqi airspace: now avoided entirely by many Western airlines
Kuwait: Airspace is currently closed and Kuwait International Airport has been damaged by a drone attack
Doha: Qatari airspace is currently closed
Bahrain: Bahrain airspace has been closed and flights are being diverted or cancelled

What are aviation authorities advising?

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has announced airspace closures as a “precautionary measure.” The “exceptional precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of flights and aircrews, and safeguarding the UAE’s territory,” it said.

The European Union Aviation Safety Authority on Saturday issued an advisory to European carriers, advising against operating in affected airspaces at “all flight levels and altitudes.”

In a statement, it advised carriers to “closely monitor airspace developments in the region and follow all available aeronautical publications concerning the region, including information shared through the European Information Sharing and Cooperation Platform on Conflict Zones, alongside available guidance or direction from their national authorities.”

What does this mean for travelers?

Travelers should expect a range of practical disruptions, including:

Technical stops: particularly on low-cost carriers, with unscheduled fuel stops in southern Europe
Cancellations: while airspace is closed, airlines have no choice but to ground flights
Schedule shifts: if and when flights resume, expect there to be knock-on impact on flight schedules as airlines scramble to get passengers back in the air
Rerouting delays: longer flight durations even on services that remain operational

Airlines are offering refunds and flexible rebooking options, though policies vary by carrier.
