Dubai Airport Closure: what you need to know

Dubai Airport Closure: what you need to know

Dubai is undergoing a monumental transformation of its aviation infrastructure.

However, it is scheduled to close as part of a remarkable $35 billion expansion plan.

DWC: Dubai’s Emerging Aviation Hub

Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), situated approximately 22 miles southwest of central Dubai, opened back in 2010.

Initially serving as a cargo hub, with passenger flights following in 2013, it currently accommodates around only 1.6 million passengers annually.

However, with the approval of a $35 billion expansion plan, DWC airport is set to become five times the size of DXB.

Why Al Maktoum International Airport?

With soaring aviation demands, from increasing tourism footfall, Dubai airport (DXB) is reaching its capacity.

Dubai’s current airport has limits for expansion because it’s close to busy highways and residential neighbourhoods. However, Al Maktoum International Airport is set right next to a vast, empty desert, which makes it the perfect spot for growth and development.

What’s Changing, and When?

The $35 billion expansion of DWC includes the construction of five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, making it five times the size of DXB in its current state.

The project is expected to be completed in phases, with the first phase aiming to accommodate 150 million passengers within the next decade. Full completion, including operational testing, is projected to extend into the 2050s.

The new terminal at DWC will feature cutting-edge technology to enhance the passenger experience, including streamlined check-in processes, automated baggage handling, and advanced security systems.

What This Means for You

This transition means you’ll eventually be flying into a brand-new, state-of-the-art airport if travelling to or through Dubai.

Dubai Airports has stated that there will be no immediate disruption to services, and travellers will be kept informed about any changes well in advance.
